Susie Kathol, a ceramic artist based in Revelstoke, BC, finds the flow and peace she experiences while making ceramics to be the closest she comes to the tranquility found in nature. With a deep appreciation for both her work as a ceramicist and as a biologist, she seeks to blend these two worlds, believing that a scientific perspective can also be artistic—and vice versa.
Raised surrounded by nature and influenced by her biologist father and artistic mother, Susie spent much of her life immersed in the natural world. Her early experience was in scientific illustration, where she learned from her mother, who illustrated and painted the plants and wildlife studied by her father. After moving to Revelstoke, Susie joined the local Potter's Guild and, over the last four years, has developed her unique body of work through online resources and guidance from fellow potters.
As a ceramicist, she works primarily with the Sgraffito technique, creating hand-thrown or slab-built pieces decorated with images of plants, animals, and fungi. Each item is painted and carved freehand, ensuring no two pieces are exactly alike. Her work is glazed with a food-safe clear finish and fired in her home studio. Susie’s perspective on wildlife, plants, and fungi has been profoundly shaped by her artistic approach, and she is grateful to pursue both her scientific and artistic passions.
